    Which Patch Types Support Iron-On?

Not all patch types are compatible with iron-on backing. PVC patches cannot withstand the heat required for application, while chenille patches have a textured surface that prevents the adhesive from bonding effectively. See the compatibility chart below for details.
Patch Type Iron-On? Default Backing Notes
Embroidered Yes Iron-on or Sew-on Most popular option for everyday apparel and accessories.
Woven Yes Iron-on or Sew-on Excellent for detailed artwork and small text.
Printed (Sublimation) Yes Iron-on or Sew-on Ideal for vibrant, full-color graphics and gradients.
Leather Yes Iron-on or Sew-on Premium finish for hats, jackets, bags, and accessories.
PVC No Sew-on Heat can damage the rubber material. Sew-on or Velcro backing is recommended.
Chenille No Sew-on The textured yarn surface prevents proper adhesive bonding.

How To Apply An Iron-On Patch

Not all patch types are compatible with iron-on backing. PVC patches cannot withstand the heat required for application, while chenille patches have a textured surface that prevents the adhesive from bonding effectively. See the compatibility chart below for details.

    Set the Iron

Use the cotton/linen setting with medium-high heat and no steam.

    Position the Patch

Place the patch adhesive-side down in the desired location.

    Cover the Patch

Protect it with a thin cotton cloth or pressing sheet.

    Press Firmly

Apply firm pressure for 30–45 seconds without moving the iron.

    Press the Back

Turn the garment inside out and press the back for 20 seconds.

    Let It Cool

Allow the patch to cool completely before use for a stronger bond.

For garments that are washed frequently, add a few stitches around the patch edge for extra durability. Combining iron-on and sew-on provides the strongest hold.

Order Custom Iron-On Patches With a 12 to 24 Hour Mockup

Custom iron-on patches offer a quick and convenient way to personalize hats, jackets, backpacks, t-shirts, and more—without the need for sewing. At Fusion Patches, iron-on backing comes standard on our embroidered, woven, printed, and leather patches at no additional cost. We offer a minimum order of just 5 pieces (10 pieces for woven patches), along with free worldwide shipping, a digital mockup within 12–24 hours, unlimited free revisions, and a money-back guarantee for complete peace of mind.

Iron-on patches perform best on cotton, denim, canvas, and most natural-fiber fabrics. They are not recommended for nylon, polyester performance wear, waterproof materials, or industrially laundered uniforms, as these fabrics may not withstand heat application. For heat-sensitive garments, sew-on or Velcro backing is the better choice. To maximize durability on clothing that is washed frequently, reinforce the patch by adding a few stitches around the edges for a long-lasting, secure attachment.

    Iron-On Patches FAQ

Applying an iron-on patch is simple. Place the patch adhesive-side down, cover it with a thin cloth, and press with a hot iron for 30–45 seconds. Turn the garment inside out and press the back for another 20 seconds, then allow it to cool completely.
Iron-on patches adhere best to cotton, denim, canvas, twill, and most natural-fiber fabrics. They are not recommended for waterproof materials, nylon, polyester performance fabrics, or heat-sensitive garments.
Iron-on patches create a strong bond, but for garments that are washed frequently or used heavily, adding a few stitches around the edges provides the most secure and long-lasting attachment.
Yes. Iron-on patches can usually be removed by reheating the adhesive and carefully peeling them away. Some adhesive residue may remain depending on the fabric and application.
Yes. Wait at least 24 hours after application before washing. Wash garments inside out using cold or warm water, and avoid high-heat drying to help extend the life of the patch.
No. Iron-on backing is available for embroidered, woven, printed, and leather patches. PVC and chenille patches are not suitable for iron-on backing because of their material properties.
Fusion Patches offers custom iron-on patches with a minimum order of just 5 pieces for most patch types. Woven patches require a minimum order of 10 pieces.
Fusion Patches provides premium-quality custom patches with iron-on backing at no extra cost, fast digital mockups within 12–24 hours, unlimited free revisions, free worldwide shipping, and a money-back guarantee to ensure complete customer satisfaction.
